FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and shipped via the port of Imari. It is characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red enamelling and gilding.

These pieces are crafted from kaolin-rich porcelain clay and fired at high temperatures. Underglaze cobalt blue is applied prior to glazing, after which iron-red enamel and gold leaf accents are painted onto the glazed surface and fired in a secondary kiln.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-painted brushwork variations, slight kiln spur marks on the underside, and natural rubbing to the gilding. The porcelain body often exhibits minor structural irregularities and subtle color bleeding along the underglaze lines.

Decorative Imari plates can be displayed on acrylic stands atop sideboards or consoles, or mounted on walls in arranged clusters. The cobalt blue and terracotta palette complements dark timber furniture, neutral plaster walls, and period cabinetry.

Clean Imari porcelain by hand using lukewarm water and a gentle liquid soap with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive pads, automated dishwashers, and harsh chemical solvents, which cause irreparable damage to delicate overglaze enamels and gilding.
