Antique Malayer Carpet

1900 - 1920
Description

A rare antique Malayer carpet woven around 120 years ago, with soft pink/red tones and pale blues on a deeper blue almost black background.  A large scale floral pattern works beautifully on this finely woven antique carpet, and in the pale blue border too.  In very good condition with a medium wool pile height all over this elegant piece.

Malayer is a large village located between the major weaving areas of Hamadan and Sarouk in Northwest Persia.  They more often wove rugs and runners, rarely producing carpet sizes such as this one.  Supplied with our anti-slip underlay, this helps add body and strength to a carpet, thus preventing wear.

If you would like to view this fine Malayer carpet at home, please make contact in your preferred way.  We love visiting customers at home showing our rugs all over the UK, or at our showroom in Crondall, Surrey.  Contact us to make an appointment soon.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Malayer carpets originate from the Malayer district in northwestern Iran, renowned for producing individualistic village textiles featuring stylised geometric and botanical motifs crafted during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation, utilizing natural plant dyes for long-lasting colouration.

Authentic examples feature hand-knotted construction, slight design variations characteristic of artisan village weaving, and soft wool pile showing subtle natural colour variations known as abrash.

Position the carpet as a central ground layer in a living room or study to add texture, warmth, and historical depth alongside contemporary or classic wooden furnishings.

Vacuum without using a rotating beater bar, rotate the rug annually to balance sunlight exposure, blot liquid spills immediately with clean water, and place a cushioned rug pad underneath.
