Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Hand-knotted construction: fine knotting typical of north-west Persian workshop weaving.
Subtle abrash across the borders: natural dye lot variations from traditional skein dyeing.
Softened terracotta and olive tones: gentle mellowing from domestic light and age.
Low, even pile wear in the field: natural patina from long use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large rectangular hand-knotted Persian Tabriz carpet originates from 1920 in the Persian style. Composed of wool and cotton with a hand-knotted weave, the piece displays a terracotta and beige palette alongside pale terracotta borders, gentle accents of olive and pink, and a soft ivory coloured background. The design incorporates an all-over repeating geometric and floral pattern, floral arabesques, and a complex multi-band border, complete with a beautifully faded appearance and a pile height that is slightly uneven. Measuring 296 cm by 386 cm, the carpet sits under furniture in an English country house setting to blend into the interior without drawing attention.

FAQs

Tabriz carpets originate from the historic weaving centre of Tabriz in northwestern Iran. They are distinguished by high knot density, intricate geometric or floral patterns, and a balanced composition often featuring central medallions or all-over field motifs.

Traditionally, Tabriz carpets are hand-knotted using wool pile spun onto a durable cotton or silk warp and weft foundation. The asymmetrical Persian knot or symmetrical Turkish knot is utilised to achieve sharp, detailed pattern definition.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise hand-knotting visible on the underside, natural vegetable dyes that show subtle colour variations termed abrash, and soft, natural wool wear consistent with age rather than chemical distressing.

A large Persian carpet serves as a grounding focal point in a living or dining room, creating contrast when paired with modern clean-lined furniture, neutral upholstery, and natural wood or polished stone surfaces.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar, rotate the carpet annually to ensure even wear, and address spills immediately by blotting with a clean damp cloth. Professional specialist cleaning is advised every few years.
