Heriz Carpet

1900 - 1920
Description

A great old Heriz carpet with rich colours and a complex design.

The central medallion is dominated by the fresh red with details picked out in inky dark blues, sublime greens and yellows. Even the border, so dark against the field is a riot of flowers and leaves once again shining with fresh colour in the details. These carpets are also incredibly tough and of very good quality wool.

I could eulogise for much longer about this piece’s merits but I think it probably speaks for itself.

It is in good condition with just a little loss to the ends. It has been professionally cleaned and is ready to use.

Date of Manufacture

Phil Bell Antique Rugs has dated this Antique Persian Heriz Carpet to the 1900s.

This Persian Heriz carpet, dating from 1900, belongs to the classic wool and cotton woven rug tradition. The floor covering displays a rich terracotta red field, dominated by a prominent geometric central medallion in navy blue, alongside inky dark blues, subtle greens, and yellows. Angular palmettes and corner spandrels enrich the complex design, complemented by a dark floral and leafy border. Visual inspection reveals intricate knotted patterns, varied colour saturation across the pile, and slight wear to the ends consistent with its age, alongside professional cleaning. Measuring 302 cm high by 245 cm wide, the rectangular rug provides substantial floor coverage. In a contemporary home, this durable textile suits heavy traffic areas such as a living room, drawing room, or grand hallway, where its heavy wool construction withstands daily use while adding traditional Persian character to an interior. The piece brings warmth and historical texture to wooden or stone flooring, anchoring furniture arrangements with its saturated palette.

Heriz carpets originate from the Heris region in Northwest Iran, near Tabriz. They are world-renowned for their distinct geometric medallion designs, angular botanical motifs, and exceptional durability.

Traditional Heriz carpets are hand-knotted using high-grade, local wool pile tied onto a heavy cotton warp and weft foundation, coloured with vegetable and natural dyes.

Authentic pieces feature bold, geometric central medallions with stylized angular foliage rather than curvilinear lines. The weave is hand-knotted, showing slight natural variations in the knotting and colour shades (abrash) on the back.

A Heriz carpet acts as an anchor in a room, complementing neutral minimalist interiors, dark timber furniture, or leather seating by introducing rich colour tones, pattern, and tactile depth.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar to prevent pile damage. Rotate the carpet periodically to ensure balanced wear, and seek professional specialist cleaning for stains.
