Antique Veramin Carpet

1900 - 1920
Description

Wonderful decorative antique Veramin carpet with a floral all over Mina Khani design in the main field.  With a rarer off white, un-dyed wool background, it allows the fine floral design with connecting vines to be seen with the soft blues and faded burnt oranges.  A large border design with a palmette motif supposedly based on a turtle, along with a 16th century 'Herati' pattern next to it.  Full of interest and artistic charm, in fabulous condition too.

Organise a home visit, we love to travel all over the UK and we would be very happy to show you this antique Veramin carpet in situ along with any other carpets you like on our website.  To see which best suits your home and interior.

Veramin is a town located in the south of Tehran.  Veramin rugs and carpets are famous for this 'Mina Khani' floral design which consists of flowers connected by vines and using soft pinks, blues, reds and yellow dyes.  A very beautiful and decorative antique carpet which is in good original condition, no damage or restoration and with good underlay we provide it would be an attractive decorative carpet for the floor.

This antique Persian Veramin carpet from 1910 displays a repeating Mina Khani lattice pattern across an ivory field, offset by terracotta red and navy blue floral rosettes and connecting vines. The wool and cotton construction is enclosed within an elaborate multi-band border featuring repeating palmettes alongside smaller floral motifs in shades of soft blue, faded burnt orange, and yellow. Measuring 310 cm high, 220 cm wide, and 1 cm deep, the textile is suitable for placement on the floor in an English country house interior, bringing traditional Persian artistry and colour to a living space, dining room, or hallway. Suitable underlay aids in floor placement and protects the weave. Retaining its good original condition with no apparent damage or restoration, the carpet exhibits natural variations in its un-dyed ivory background and traditional botanical motifs. The complex layout uses fine connecting vines to link the symmetrical rosettes across the rectangular format, while the outer borders frame the central field with layered geometric and floral detailing. The muted palette of terracotta, ivory, blue, and yellow works well in traditional residential settings where textile floor coverings add warmth and pattern. Placement requires a flat surface protected by appropriate padding to ensure the long-term preservation of the wool and cotton pile.

Veramin carpets originate from the town of Veramin south of Tehran and are distinguished by their structured geometric floral patterns, most notably the all-over Mina Khani lattice motif featuring repeated circular blossoms.

These carpets are constructed with a hand-spun wool pile knotted onto a cotton or wool foundation, utilising natural plant and mineral dyes to produce deep reds, blues, and ivory tones.

Authenticity is indicated by a dense knotting technique, asymmetrical Persian knots, a repeating Mina Khani or rosetted lattice design, and subtle colour variations known as abrash throughout the pile.

Place the carpet on hardwood or stone flooring alongside neutral upholstery to anchor the living area, allowing the geometric pattern to contrast against clean-lined contemporary furniture.

Maintain the carpet by vacuuming regularly without a rotating beater bar, rotating it annually to ensure even wear, using a high-quality rug pad, and relying on specialist dry rug cleaners for spot removal.
