Fine Kashan Carpet, Central Persia, Early 20th Century, 3.72m X 2.60m

1900 - 1920
Description

Dating to the early 20th century, this is a very decorative Kashan carpet with several distinctive features. First, the wool quality is excellent, soft and velvety. The knot count is also high, suggesting this carpet may originally have been a special order. Then it has the most delightful coloring and design. The jewel-like central medallion appears to be floating above the eau-de-nil field and is surrounded by flowering arabesques. Note there are no spandrels in the corners of the field, rarely seen in Persian medallion carpets, which gives the carpet a distinctive elegance. The borders are also exceptional artistic in their conception and drawing. I particularly like the delightful repeating petals in the guard stripe and the striking burnt orange coloring which adds a spicy element to the composition. Overall, I would say this is a highly decorative and elegant Persian carpet which would be ideal for many room settings. It is in excellent condition, and has recently been professionally cleaned in our workshops.

This early twentieth-century Persian Kashan carpet originates from Central Persia and reflects the Persian style. Hand-knotted from wool and cotton, the textile displays a soft and velvety texture. The colour palette includes light blue, navy, and terracotta, complemented by a burnt orange border and darker central tones. The design incorporates a central starburst medallion surrounded by floral palmettes and arabesque scrolls, all enclosed within a multi-band floral border on an eau-de-nil field lacking corner spandrels. The repeating petals within the guard stripe complete the decorative pattern. Measuring 372 cm high by 260 cm wide, the carpet provides substantial floor coverage suitable for principal reception rooms or large living spaces in an English Country House interior. The construction exhibits a fine knot count and detailed drawing throughout the borders and field composition. Freshly cleaned, the piece presents an intact pile and structured edging, maintaining its visual impact for placement on wooden flooring.

Originating from the historic city of Kashan in Central Persia, these carpets gained prominence during the Safavid dynasty and experienced a major revival in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They are characterized by refined floral patterns, central starburst medallions, and structured corner spandrels.

Kashan carpets are typically hand-knotted using high-grade wool pile on a cotton warp and weft foundation. Artisans employ the asymmetrical Persian knot (Senneh) to achieve high knot densities, allowing for exceptionally detailed floral scrollwork and precise geometric motifs.

Authentic pieces exhibit dense knotting, a soft wool texture, and a traditional color palette that frequently incorporates shades of blue, cream, and terracotta. Examining the back of the carpet reveals fine, tight asymmetrical knotting and natural variations in dye tones known as abrash.

Large Kashan carpets function as foundational elements to define primary seating areas or dining rooms. The intricate floral patterns and blue or red tones harmonize equally well alongside classic dark mahogany furniture or neutral, contemporary seating.

Routine maintenance requires regular vacuuming using suction only, avoiding roller brush attachments that can snag the wool fibers. Professional cleaning should be undertaken periodically by a specialist, and rotating the rug annually ensures balanced wear and light exposure.
