This Edwardian sterling silver picture frame dates to 1910 and belongs to the gentleman's library style. The piece possesses a polished silver finish, an arched crest, and an enamelled flag motif featuring the 1914 allies in red, blue, and other enamel colours at the top. The smooth silver border surrounds a glazed aperture holding pale green silk backing fabric with a gold stamp, while a full English hallmark appears on the side. The object measures 18.7 cm high, 11.8 cm wide, and 2.5 cm deep. This tabletop accessory fits well on a mantelpiece or desk in a home today to display photographs. The piece works effectively in a study, library, or living room alongside other traditional furnishings. The construction includes a folding easel stand on the original velvet backing to support the frame upright on horizontal surfaces.

Commemorative silver picture frames from the early twentieth century were produced to mark significant historical events, such as military alliances or royal occasions. These pieces often feature polished sterling silver surrounds decorated with fine enamelled motifs representing national flags or official insignia.

These frames are constructed predominantly from sterling silver with enamelled detailing for decorative crests. The backing and easel support are traditionally made from wood, velvet, or moire silk to protect photographs and allow stable display.

Authentic English silver pieces bear official hallmarks stamped into the metal, including a makers mark, purity mark such as the lion passant, assay office mark, and a date letter. High-quality silversmiths often stamped their retail address or company name onto the silk lining or wooden back.

Display an antique silver frame on a mantelpiece, office desk, or sideboard alongside contemporary art books and minimalist decor. Mixing vintage silver objects with clean modern surfaces creates a refined, layered aesthetic.

Clean silver frames using a soft, non-abrasive silver polishing cloth, avoiding aggressive liquid polishes that can damage enamel or soak into fabric backings. Keep the frame away from direct sunlight and high humidity to preserve the enamelling and prevent tarnish.
