Guilloche is a decorative technique involving precise, intricate mechanical patterns engraved into metal beneath a translucent layer of enamel. It gained immense popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly within Edwardian and Art Deco decorative arts.

These items are typically constructed from sterling silver or silver gilt as a base, featuring a hand-applied glass enamel coating fused to the metal surface through high-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces usually bear clear silver hallmarks indicating the assay office, date letter, and makers mark. Under magnification, genuine antique enamel often displays microscopic age-related crazing and artisanal hand-finishing rather than modern synthetic uniformity.

This type of small decorative object works well when placed on a dressing table, desk, or mantelpiece to hold small accessories, adding a concentrated splash of colour and historical craftsmanship to contemporary spaces.

Enamel is fragile and sensitive to harsh chemicals, abrasives, and ultrasonic cleaners. Maintenance should be limited to gentle dusting with a soft cloth and careful polishing of only the exposed silver portions using a non-abrasive silver cloth.
