Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early 18th century during the reign of King George I, a bureau bookcase combines a slant-front writing desk with an upper display cabinet or cupboard. Characterised by classical proportions and fine timber veneers, these pieces served as comprehensive working cabinets for private residences.

Cabinetmakers predominantly used native oak or pine frames veneered with figured or burr walnut. Hardware typically featured cast brass drop handles, engraved escutcheons, and steel locks, with the entire structure supported on turned bun feet or bracket feet.

Look for period-appropriate construction details, such as hand-cut dovetail joints, oak drawer linings with grain running from front to back, and decorative feather-banding or cross-banding on drawer fronts. Authentic period brassware will show hand-hammered marks and natural surface oxidisation on the reverse.

Position the piece as a focal point in a study, drawing room, or hallway to contrast rich timber tones against neutral wall colours. The interior fitted drawers and pigeonholes provide organised storage for modern stationery, while keeping workspace items concealed behind the fall front.

Keep the piece positioned away from direct sunlight, radiator heat sources, and rapid humidity changes to prevent veneer movement or wood shrinkage. Clean wooden surfaces using a soft dry cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year.
