18th century
Description

A superb solid sterling silver wine funnel, dating from the very end of the reign of George IV.

The body of the funnel and the strainer are hallmarked for London 1829. The silversmith is possibly James Beebe. The outer tang (the hook that holds the funnel in place on a decanter or claret jug) is in the form of a shell and the rim features a gadroon border. There are three outer ribs on the body of the funnel and patterned piercings inside the bowl. The muslin holder is not hallmarked and is a good tight fit.

There are a few dents and dings the body and the tip of the funnel has been bent at some point, but nothing to detract from the quality of the piece.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian wine funnel is a traditional table accessory designed to aerate wine during decanting while filtering out sediment, lees, and cork debris common in eighteenth and early nineteenth-century vintages.

They were crafted primarily from solid sterling silver, featuring a removable inner strainer bowl with fine perforations, an intermediate securing ring, and a curved lower spout designed to direct liquid down the inner wall of a decanter.

Authentic Georgian examples feature British hallmarks including a lion passant, makers mark, town mark, and date letter, typically located along the upper rim or body, alongside hand-punched strainer perforations and gadrooned or beaded borders.

An antique silver wine funnel serves as a functional decorative centrepiece when displayed alongside glass decanters on a dining sideboard, bar cart, or drinks cabinet.

Rinse thoroughly with warm water and mild soap after use to prevent wine acid staining, dry immediately with a soft cloth, and polish periodically using a specialist silver cream or cloth to manage natural tarnish.
