17th Century Yorkshire Coffer

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Dickinson's Antiques

A superb and rare early 17th Century Yorkshire Coffer with typical floral marquetry to the panels. The top rail carved with oak leaves and acorns, legs and wide centre rail carved with similar stylised acorns, leaves and thistles. A thick moulded planked lid retains its original ring hinges. All carving is bold and vigorous. This coffer is of a superb colour and in great condition.
At some point in the coffers life the Yorkshire mindset of "make do and mend" was applied and the till has been repurposed and strengthened the bottom.
Elizabethan in character, a style which continued within the prosperous 17th century cities of Leeds and Halifax. For similar examples of mid-17th century inlaid furniture attributed to Yorkshire see the Shibden Hall Collection, Halifax, West Yorkshire
