Small Antique Oak Coffer

19th century
Description

Nice example of an early Oak Coffer, likely to have originated from France. It has an unusual design with a sliding lid which overhangs the box - making it great for a coffee table. It has been naively carved both sides with a simple X design, meaning there is no real front or back. It has a panelled construction on square legs with a three plank top.

It dates from the late 18th / early 19th century and is in good original condition. It is generally clean and tidy inside with its original solid floor.

There are some historic signs of worm which have all been treated as a precaution and have not affected the coffer structurally or aesthetically. It is strong and sturdy with no major damages and it has developed a beautiful rich patina. It has been cleaned and polished and is ready for the home.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
