Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in Paris during the mid-eighteenth century, a bonheur du jour is a specialized form of ladies writing desk featuring a flat writing surface topped by a cabinet or set of small drawers. The name translates roughly to delight of the day, referencing its use for writing personal letters, reading, and storing stationery or trinkets.

Nineteenth-century French furniture makers typically utilized exotic wood veneers such as kingwood, rosewood, and tulipwood to create intricate marquetry and parquetry patterns. These pieces were frequently adorned with cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and inlaid hand-painted porcelain plaques inspired by Sevres porcelain designs.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display precise dovetail drawer joints, hand-chased ormolu mounts with natural age patina, and thick wood veneers laid over solid oak or pine carcasses. The presence of hand-painted porcelain plaques with gilded bronze surrounds also indicates late nineteenth-century Rococo Revival production.

A bonheur du jour functions as a compact statement piece in a hallway, bedroom alcove, or formal drawing room. Its slim profile makes it suitable as a vanity table or occasional writing desk, offering visual interest when paired with contemporary art or understated lighting.

Keep cabinet furniture away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent veneer shrinkage or lifting. Dust wood surfaces with a soft, dry cloth and avoid chemical polishes; clean gilt-bronze mounts gently using a soft brush to remove dust without stripping the natural patina.
