Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late Victorian and Arts and Crafts periods, fire screens transitioned from purely utilitarian heat shields into central decorative focal points for the hearth. Craftsmen frequently utilized hand-hammered metals like copper and wrought iron to celebrate traditional metalworking techniques and stylized figurative motifs.

Period fire screens were predominantly constructed using wrought iron frameworks joined with rivets or collared joints, combined with copper or brass face panels. Decorative imagery was typically achieved through repousse, a technique where sheet metal is hammered from the reverse side to create low-relief designs.

Authentic pieces feature irregular hammer marks on the reverse of repousse panels, hand-formed rivets, and natural patination or mild verdigris in crevices. Modern reproductions often show uniform machine stamping, smooth non-textured backs, and modern weld marks rather than forged joins.

A metal fire screen can be placed on a non-working hearth or inside an unused fireplace opening to anchor the space with historical texture. Alternatively, the screen can function as a standalone decorative floor sculpture in a living room, hallway, or reading nook.

Dust metal surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemical polishes or abrasive cleaners that can strip away the original aged patina; a thin layer of microcrystalline wax can be applied annually to protect both iron and copper components from moisture.
