Rare Crocodile & Sterling Silver Hip / Spirit Flask with Collapsable Cup - 1911

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A magnificent and rare hip or spirit flask, rare enough that I have never seen one ever before quite like this!

Of course what makes it special is the sterling silver lid which when removed can be expanded into a drinking cup each section with partial English hallmark, quite extraordinary.

The flask is covered in a cognac coloured Crocodile or Alligator skin with a bright and glossy patina. The top is all made from sterling silver, the dimple in the centre of the lid keeps the hinged internal lid in place, gilded inside.

The silver is fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1911 and also has a Patent Number of 6699.

Excellent condition measuring 6 1/2" tall x 3 3/4" x 1 1/2".

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Edwardian era, hip flasks were key accessories for field sports, hunting parties, and travel. High-end makers combined blown glass liners with sterling silver fittings and exotic leather covers to create functional luxury items for gentlemen.

Luxury spirit flasks typically feature a mouth-blown glass body to prevent spirits from reacting with metal, housed inside a leather sleeve such as crocodile, pigskin, or morocco leather, finished with sterling silver caps and removable drinking cups.

Authentic British examples display standard silver hallmarks stamped on both the cap collar and the collapsible cup, including a makers mark, town mark, lion passant for sterling quality, and a date letter denoting the exact year of manufacture.

Antique flasks are commonly displayed on drinks trolleys, sideboards, or inside glazed cabinets alongside vintage glassware and decanters. Grouping them on brass or mirrored trays highlights the contrast between polished silver and patinated leather.

The interior glass should be rinsed with lukewarm water, avoiding submersing the leather sleeve in liquid. Polishing cloths should be used carefully on the silver components to prevent transfer onto the leather or removing natural patination.
