17th century
Description

This is a fine quality antique English 17th century Charles II oak carved twin panel coffer, circa 1680, with small proportions, fine carvings and stunning colour, in excellent original condition.

Summary:

• Item: Coffer / Chest

• Circa: 1680

• Period: Charles II

• Provenance: England, UK

• Wood: Solid oak

• Moulded panelled top

• Original “zig-zag” carvings

• Peg & joined panelled design

• Original length stiles (legs)

• Left-hand stile initialised “GS”

• Original wire loop hinges

• Working lock & key

• Original key escutcheon

• Lovely narrow proportions (3ft 2?” wide)

• Original polish & patination

• Superb deep rich oxblood colour

• Free delivery to England, Wales & Southern Scotland*

• Free 14-day UK returns

The coffer is constructed with a moulded inset panel top, with a joined section below, which is constructed with butt joints to the corners, secured by peg construction. The lid opens on its original wire loop hinges to reveal a spacious interior. The interior is clean, dry and practical & usable, retaining its original floor-boards. The coffer also incorporates a working steel lock and working key. The front of the coffer is decorated with the original primitive “zig-zag” carvings, which are present to the top and bottom rail, the stiles and dividing the two front panels. The sides of the coffer also feature inset panels. The coffer stands on the original reeded stiles (feet), which is nice to see; often they are cut down due to damage or wear and tear. Interestingly, the left hand stile is carved with the initials “G.S”, which may have been the original owner of the coffer. The back of the coffer retains its original rough-hewn panels along with the original floor. Overall, this coffer boasts a lovely deep, rich oxblood colour and patination and is an ideal interior design piece.

Condition Report:

The coffer has been wax-polished, to a professional standard in our workshop. Nominal old marks to the top and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. Such old use marks are inevitable and perfectly acceptable due to its age and use it would have received. The interior is clean, dry, and usable. The coffer retains its original lid, floor, sides and back. The coffer also retains its original loop hinges which is rare to see. The coffer also incorporates a working lock, with working key. The coffer stands on extended stiles (feet) and the carvings to the front rail, panels & stiles are original (not later). The coffer is solid in joint; it does not wobble on the floor and is ready to use. Considering the age of this coffer, it is in excellent condition. It is rare to find a coffer of this period in such clean condition.
