Rupert Landen Antiques has dated this piece to the Before 1700 period.
If you look closely at the hinges you can still see the remains of the original tinning coating. A piece of furniture of this period is relatively easy to date, because there are still pieces like this in churches around the country. It is made from riven boards - each one being a single piece of oak - looking down the sides, you can see that they are cupped. In addition to the construction, there are naive carvings to either end meaning it can be dated fairly accurately at C1530 to C1550. It has a candle box in side - we suspect this is a later addition. This has been in our house for some time and we will be sad to see it go - a rare opportunity to own something that was around in the rein of Queen Elizabeth I, if only it could talk!
