This Victorian secretaire Wellington chest of drawers dates to 1860 in the mid Victorian style. The honey-brown piece uses maple and rosewood timbers with rosewood crossbanding, brass hardware including turned knobs and a lockplate, and a black leather skiver on the fall-front writing surface. It displays dark dark-banded mouldings around the drawer fronts, turned wooden drawer pulls, and a hinged side-locking bar mechanism. The chest stands 140 cm high, 69 cm wide, and 36 cm deep. Designed for a gentleman's library, this compact cabinet suits a study, home office, or living room as a writing desk and storage chest. The drop-down fall front accommodates a laptop, while the interior provides pigeonholes and small velvet-lined drawers with ivory-style handles. Below the secretaire section, three lower drawers and a separate top drawer offer additional storage space. The restored honey-brown timber and dark inlay complement traditional or contemporary home office interiors.

Named after the Duke of Wellington, a Wellington chest is a tall, narrow cabinet characterised by a hinged side pilaster that locks all drawers simultaneously. Secretaire variants feature a fall-front drawer that opens to reveal a fitted writing surface, small internal drawers, and pigeonholes.

Victorian secretaire chests are constructed using solid timber frames of mahogany, oak, or pine, often layered with decorative veneers such as birdseye maple, rosewood, or walnut. Interior writing surfaces are commonly lined with skiver leather, paired with turned wooden or brass handles.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original wooden or brass hardware, and the characteristic side-locking flap mechanism secured by a key. Examination of the interior drawer linings often reveals secondary woods like pine or oak showing historical wear.

Position the chest as a compact home office desk or accent piece in a study, hallway, or living space. Combining warm timber tones with minimal contemporary lighting or modern artwork creates a balanced contrast between historical cabinetmaking and clean modern aesthetics.

Position the chest away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer cracking or discolouration. Dust the wood surfaces with a dry cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly, ensuring wax does not contact the leather writing insert.
