Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This Regency period Wellington chest is made from warm brown mahogany with a fine finish and patina. The tall, upright form stands 149 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, incorporating seven horizontal drawers fitted with turned wooden knob handles. Two fluted pilasters frame the drawer stack, topped by carved roundels below the projecting moulded cornice, while a hinged vertical side locking bar secures the drawers when closed. In a modern interior, this chest functions well in a bedroom, study, or hallway as a compact storage unit for clothes, documents, or accessories. The vertical proportions make efficient use of floor space in traditional or period-inspired rooms while offering deep drawer capacity within a narrow footprint.

Named after the First Duke of Wellington to commemorate his victory at Waterloo in 1815, a Wellington chest is a tall, narrow chest of drawers traditionally secured by a hinged side locking bar.

These chests were predominantly crafted from high-grade mahogany, often featuring flame mahogany veneers, solid oak drawer linings, and hand-turned wooden knobs or brass hardware.

Authentic pieces feature hand-dovetailed drawer joints, an operational hinged side bar that locks all drawers simultaneously, period-correct timbers, and hand-cut brass locks.

Due to its compact footprint and vertical proportion, a Wellington chest works exceptionally well in narrow alcoves, hallway corners, or home offices as a refined storage solution.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice a year along the grain, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage or fading.
