Fine George III Mahogany Chest on Chest with Blind Fret Cornice

18th century
Description

Fine George III Mahogany Chest on Chest with Blind Fret Cornice, Original Brass Handles & Ogee Bracket Feet

A superb George III mahogany chest on chest, dating from the late 18th century and of particularly desirable small proportions, making it an exceptionally versatile piece for both period and contemporary interiors.

Constructed from beautifully figured mahogany, the chest displays a rich, warm colour and excellent original patina developed over more than two centuries. The upper section is surmounted by a finely carved blind fret cornice, a feature associated with high-quality Georgian cabinet making, adding both elegance and architectural interest.

The chest retains its original brass swan-neck handles and matching escutcheons, an increasingly uncommon and highly desirable feature that enhances its authenticity. The well-proportioned arrangement of graduated drawers provides generous storage, while the whole stands on elegant ogee bracket feet, completing its balanced and refined appearance.

With its outstanding craftsmanship, excellent colour and practical size, this fine George III chest on chest is equally suited to a bedroom, drawing room or entrance hall and represents a timeless example of English Georgian furniture.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III chest-on-chest, also known as a tallboy, is a two-part wooden storage cabinet produced during the reign of King George III (17601820). The design features a smaller chest fitted atop a slightly larger base chest to provide ample vertical drawer capacity.

High-grade Cuban or West Indian mahogany was the preferred primary timber due to its density and rich grain patterns. Secondary woods inside the drawers often included oak, pine, or deal, while cast brass hardware was standard for handles and keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic pieces from this era display hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed drawer bottoms, and natural shrinkage cracks along side panels. Original back panels typically show hand-sawn timber marks and secondary woods that exhibit age-appropriate oxidisation.

A mahogany tallboy anchors a room with visual height and warm timber tones, complementing both traditional schemes and minimalist modern spaces. Placing the chest against a neutral backdrop allows the timber grain and architectural cornice details to act as a focal point.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent drying and timber movement. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually along the wood grain and dust regularly with a clean, soft microfibre cloth.
