18th Century George III Period Mahogany Chest on Chest, C1780

18th century
Description

Untouched 18th-Century George III Period Mahogany Chest on Chest or Tallboy

A superb and completely untouched late 18th-century George III period figured solid mahogany chest on chest, retaining its original colour, surface and fittings throughout.

Dating from circa 1780, it features a moulded cornice above two short and six long, cockbeaded, graduated oak-lined drawers, all fitted with the original finely brass swan neck handles and escutcheons. The whole piece stands on its original tall, elegant bracket feet, giving it excellent presence and poised proportions. The surface has never been stripped or refinished, resulting in a truly beautiful, untouched patina that has developed naturally over more than two centuries. The mahogany has acquired a rich depth of colour, enhancing the warmth and figure of the timber, a defining characteristic of the best Georgian furniture. Sturdy, strong and ready for everyday use, it perfectly captures the relaxed refinement of the English country house look.

Traditionally designed for storing sheets, clothing and fine textiles, 18th-century chest-on-chests are highly sought after for their superior cabinetmaking, classic lines and exceptional choice of materials. This example is no exception: it is a testament to first-rate Georgian craftsmanship and offers both practical storage and strong decorative impact. For ease of transport and installation, this tallboy separates into two sections, making it suitable for both period homes and modern interiors alike.

A wonderfully original Georgian mahogany chest-on-chest, combining authenticity, elegance and functionality, an ideal statement piece for any interior that values history, quality and timeless style.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III chest on chest, also known as a tallboy, is a two-sectioned wooden storage piece crafted in Britain during the reign of King George III (17601820). It features a narrower upper chest resting atop a slightly wider lower chest, designed to minimise floor space while maximising vertical storage.

These pieces were predominantly constructed using solid and veneered mahogany or walnut, incorporating secondary timbers such as oak or pine for internal drawer linings. Decorative elements included cast brass drop handles, keyhole escutcheons, and hand-cut dovetail drawer joints.

Authentic period examples typically feature hand-sawn drawer construction with irregular dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary drawer bottoms, original brass hardware with age-appropriate patination, and classical architectural elements such as bracket feet and moulded cornices.

Position the cabinet as a focal point against a neutral backdrop in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway to contrast historical woodwork with modern decor. Complement the deep mahogany tones with warm ambient lighting and contemporary minimalist artwork nearby.

Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement, cracking, or colour fading. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the protective finish.
