Description:
This is a fine quality antique English 17th century solid oak carved triple panel coffer, circa 1680, with good colour, in excellent condition. The coffer is constructed with a moulded two plank top, with a joined section below, which is constructed with butt joints to the corners, secured by peg construction. The lid opens using later steel strap hinges to reveal a spacious interior, which retains the original candle box. The interior is clean, dry and practical & usable, retaining its original floor-boards. The coffer also incorporates the original working steel clasp, lock and working key. The front of the coffer is profusely decorated with the original lunette carvings, below which are three inset carved panels. The sides of the coffer also feature lunette carvings and inset panels. The coffer stands on the original stiles (feet), which also boast inset scribe carving along the entire length. The back of the coffer retains its original rough-hewn panels along with the original floor. Overall, this coffer boasts a mellow colour and patination and is an ideal interior design piece.

Condition Report:
This carved oak coffer / blanket box is in excellent clean condition, considering its age. The coffer has been wax-polished, to a professional standard in our workshop. Nominal old marks to the top (see photos) and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. Such old use marks are inevitable and perfectly acceptable due to its age and use it would have received. The interior is clean, dry, and usable. The coffer retains its original lid, floor, sides and back. The steel strap hinges are later additions, possibly replaced in the late Georgian or Victorian period. The coffer incorporates a working steel clasp, lock, with working key. The coffer stands on the original stiles (feet) and the carvings to the front rail, panels & stiles are original (not later). The coffer is solid in joint; it does not wobble on the floor and is ready to use. Considering the age of this coffer, it is in excellent condition. It is rare to find a coffer of this period in such clean condition.
