Description

A superb and rare mid 17th Century Yorkshire Coffer with typical floral marquetry to the panels. The uprights at either end carved with grape vines and acorns. The panels are applied to the back of the framework to create depth to the front of the chest, this is a feature often seen on the best examples. The top is original but has had numerous hinges over the years, the drawers have been relined in pine at some stage. The Marquetry to the front of the chest is in remarkably good condition.

Due to striking similarities in the design and carving this Coffer is thought to be from the same workshop as some of the furniture on show in the collection of Shibden Hall near Halifax, the home of Anne Lister.
