Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This late Georgian pedestal desk comes in dark mahogany wood with a polished finish and brass hardware. The piece features a flexible slatted tambour rolltop shutter on the upper section, opening to reveal a fitted interior and a pull-out writing slide. The lower structure is arranged in a pedestal kneehole construction with bracket feet supporting twin banks of graduated drawers flanking a central space, complemented by brass swan-neck handles on each drawer front and keyholes fitted with metal escutcheons. The wood displays natural grain variations in deep reddish-brown tones across the drawer fronts and panels, while minor surface wear is visible on the edges of the desk. Measuring 96.5 cm high, 91.5 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, this compact writing desk provides a practical workspace for a home study, library, or traditional office setting. The traditional silhouette and enclosed storage make it suitable for writing correspondence, organising paperwork, or holding stationery supplies in a period or transitional interior.

FAQs

Positioning a dark mahogany piece against neutral walls or linen textiles provides a refined contrast in a contemporary study or living area. Combining the desk with modern brass lighting or subtle contemporary art balances historical proportions with contemporary interior aesthetics.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cotton cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly along the grain twice a year. Keep the desk away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent wood movement or cracking, and wax the flexible tambour track to ensure smooth operation.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, hand-sawn secondary timber linings, and period-correct brass hardware with cast thread detail. Natural age marks, shrinkage gaps, and authentic wear along the slide mechanism also help confirm genuine period manufacture.

Craftsmen typically utilized solid mahogany and mahogany veneers due to their stability and dense grain. Internal drawer linings were commonly crafted from oak or pine, while hardware comprised cast brass handles, escutcheons, and iron locks.

A Georgian tambour desk utilizes a flexible shutter composed of thin wooden slats fixed to a flexible canvas backing. Developed during the late eighteenth century, this mechanism slides smoothly along curved side grooves to conceal or reveal small drawers, pigeonholes, and a writing surface.
