William And Mary Walnut Chest 17th Century

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Walton House Antiques

A rare late 17th century William and Mary walnut chest of two long drawers below a deep storage chest. This form of chest is very unusual while the quality is exceptional. The carcase is veneered with finely figured chevron crossbanding and cross grained edging. Also the engraved brass handles and escutcheons are original, and of exceptional quality. The chest lock is integral to the escutcheon which again is very rare. All this points to the chest having been made by a reputable craftsman, although the provenance is not known at present. The Gerrit Jensen chest at Hampton Court Palace is of a similar nature and would have probably been used to store valuable textiles.
