A 19thc Military Campaign Writing Slope

19th century
Description

A 19thC military campaign writing slope with 2 secret drawers. Very nice brass banding and corner caps. Good flush military brass side carrying handles. Working lock and period key. The top lifts and rests in the vertical on butt hinges. The top has a fold down internal flap which reveals slots for notes and letters retained by two brass latches. There is a burgundy leatherette covered surface which fold out to reveal the old baize writing surface (patch repair). Both section of this lift up one to reveal storage and behind a lift our wooden panel 2 secret drawers. The other area has a brass catch which when opened reveals more storage. There is a section containing a brass capped ink well and a lidded area with a turned bone pull, shaped pen dish and stamps/clips slot. One of the brass lid straps is slightly raised and there is a minor crack in the top (see photos) also the right hand butt hinge area shows an old crack which is solid and of no consequence. The top has an initials engraved brass cartouche Overall a good looking example of a military writing slope.
