Late 17th Century Welsh Oak Coffer (Coffor) or Mule Chest

A fine quality oak Welsh mule chest or Welsh coffer circa 1690 with a great colour and beautiful mellow patina.

The top with working lock and key is unusual in that it is set with four panels that replicate the front and the sides of the chest. Two drawers with locks sit above one very long drawer, lock now missing, which are sometimes called sword or rapier drawers.

This is a good honest chest with minor restorations to the drawers etc. The hinges have been replaced at some point.
