A very good 17th Century Oak Coffer in good clean condition with original hinges. The carved serpents and strap work decoration has been ebonized originally, the colour and surface of the piece is as it was when made when a thin layer of clear varnish was applied. This technique and type of furniture is discussed in the Victor Chinnery book : Oak Furniture , The British Tradition. Page 137.
