Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An 18th-century giltwood candlestick is a hand-carved wooden candle holder coated with a plaster-like gesso preparation and decorated with ultra-thin gold leaf. Commonly commissioned for churches, cathedrals, and aristocratic estates across Europe, these pieces feature ornate Baroque or Rococo architectural motifs.

These candlesticks were carved from lightweight softwoods such as pine, lime, or poplar. The carved wood was coated with multiple layers of gessoa mixture of animal glue binder and chalkbefore soft clay bole was applied to secure the water-gilded gold leaf finish.

Authentic period pieces display hand-chiseled tool marks beneath the surface, natural timber shrinkage cracks, and underlying white gesso or reddish clay bole where the gold leaf has worn away over time. They often show historical iron pricket spikes or evidence of early conversion to socket fittings.

Interior designers frequently position individual or paired giltwood candlesticks on contemporary sideboards, mantelpieces, or marble consoles. The distressed gilded texture provides visual warmth and architectural contrast against neutral walls and clean-lined modern furniture.

Giltwood requires delicate maintenance using only a soft, dry artist brush or ostrich feather duster to gently lift surface dust. Liquid cleaners, damp cloths, and chemical polishes must be strictly avoided, as moisture dissolves water-soluble gesso and permanently strips the gold leaf layer.
