Rare Antique English Cake Knife - Golf Club - 1910

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A rare and highly collectable boxed novelty cake knife, clearly made for a golf devotee. The knife is made from silver plate with the makers mark marked on the blade E C K & Co, I have been unable to find the identity of this silversmith.

It is of course the handle which makes this the gem that it is, made from carved and polished Mother of Pearl in the form of a golf club. It is lucky enough to have been struck with an English design registration number for the year 1910, late Edwardian in era.

Excellent condition making this the perfect knife for the wedding day of the golfer in your family.

The knife measuring 10" x 1 1/4" and the box measures 11 1/4" x 2 1/2" x 1".

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Edwardian era, silver manufacturers crafted novelty serving utensils featuring thematic motifs, such as golf clubs, to cater to popular leisure pursuits and sporting pastimes.

These utensils commonly feature silver or electroplated silver blades paired with carved mother of pearl, bone, or ivory handles, presented in custom velvet-lined leatherette cases.

Authentic pieces generally display makers marks or silver hallmarks near the bolster, accurate hand-carved handle details, and age-appropriate wear to the silver plating and presentation box.

Cased serving pieces can be displayed open on a dining sideboard, inside a glazed cabinet, or atop a drinks trolley to function as a decorative conversation piece.

Clean the blade gently using warm water and mild soap, ensuring the mother of pearl handle is not submerged, and dry thoroughly before wiping silver surfaces with a soft polishing cloth.
