Small Seventeenth Century Oak Coffer

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A really good example of a seventeenth century oak coffer. The coffer is of a very desirable small size and stands high on it’s legs and with good proportions. The coffer is quite plain with simple fielded panels on the front, but everything while plain in design is of superb workmanship. The coffer is in great original condition with all original base boards and back and even the original candle box inside which is so often removed, the only real alteration are the hinges which have been changed from ring hinges to strap hinges in the eighteenth century, so even the replacement is two hundred years old. The coffer has a great original patina and dark rich colour. There has been a little historic woodworm in the sapwood on the legs but it is ancient and treated. The whole is a very good piece of period country furniture and has a great oak interior look. C.1680.
