A very good traditional Afghan village carpet by Ersari Turkmen weavers.

The carpet has three rows of six large guls, the border design is very detailed, the design in the large guls indicates the village and family group who wove the carpet. The carpet has a very rustic feel due to the colour change across the width of the carpet at the far end, this is due to changes in dye lots (not fading). This old Afghan village carpet originates from circa 1920 in an Afghan tribal style. Woven from hand-knotted wool pile, the piece displays a deep red ground with repeating dark navy octagonal gul motifs and a detailed geometric border. Visible features include a rustic colour change across the width at one end caused by dye lot variations, original kilim end finishes at both ends, and very slight even wear throughout the pile. The rug measures 360 cm high, 252 cm wide and 1 cm deep. Suitable for heavy domestic use, the carpet works well as a floor covering in a traditional living space, a gentleman's library or a study. It provides warmth and texture underfoot while anchoring furniture arrangements in large rooms.

Ersari carpets originate from the Ersari tribe of the Turkmen people in Central Asia and northern Afghanistan. They are traditionally recognised by their rich crimson or deep red wool grounds and repeating octagonal stepped motifs known as guls.

Traditional Afghan rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the foundation (warp and weft). The deep red and navy tones are typically derived from natural vegetable and plant dyes, such as madder root and indigo.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle variations in colour tone known as abrash, caused by hand-dyed wool batches. They feature asymmetrical hand-knotted pile, soft wool foundations, and geometric border patterns characteristic of Central Asian weaving traditions.

A rich red tribal carpet provides visual grounding in both traditional dark wood spaces and minimalist contemporary rooms. It pairs effectively with natural leather, brass accents, dark timber, or neutral-toned upholstered furniture.

Suction-only vacuuming without a rotary beater bar prevents fibre damage. Direct sunlight exposure should be limited to prevent uneven fading, and spillages must be blotted immediately with a clean dry cloth rather than rubbed.
