Unusual Antique English Figural Dish by William Padley C.1890

19th century
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A really unusual late Victorian silver plated dish formed by two hands cupped together. I am not sure if this dish was for a particular use, such as for visiting cards.

The handle is of naturalistic form with grapevine decoration. The underside of each hand is struck with the retailer's mark ( Pearce of Leeds and Huddersfield). The silversmith's makers mark is also present for the well renowned Sheffield maker of William Padley.

Excellent condition, measuring 8" x 5 1/2" x 4" tall to top of handle.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1890s:
Retailer stamp on the base: Pearce of Leeds and Huddersfield, operating late 19th century.
Cast grapevine handle: detailed naturalistic modelling typical of late Victorian electroplate.
Formed sheet metal cupped palms: pressed construction method common to late Victorian novelties.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This unusual late Victorian trinket dish takes the form of two cupped human hands joined at the wrist, finished with a silver plated surface that reflects the light. The naturalistic handle is decorated with a botanical vine motif, and the piece carries the silversmith's marks for William Padley alongside retailer marks for Pearce of Leeds and Huddersfield on the underside. Measuring 10 cm high, 20 cm wide, and 14 cm deep, the item rests flat on its base. Practical for holding visiting cards or small personal items, this dish sits easily on a sideboard top or entry table in a hallway. The reflective silver finish complements traditional and eclectic interiors, while the figural hand design provides a tactile quality for everyday use. Placed near an entrance or in a living room, it offers a functional surface for everyday storage.

FAQs

Clean gently using a soft microfibre cloth and specialised non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding harsh chemical dip solutions that can strip original oxidisation or thin electroplated layers.

This decorative silver dish functions well on an entryway sideboard as a catchall tray, on a dressing table to store jewellery, or styled atop coffee table books to add metallic texture.

Authentic late Victorian silver pieces feature stamped makers marks, city hallmarks, or electroplate registration numbers, along with crisp detail in cast motifs such as hands or botanical handles.

These items were predominantly constructed from solid sterling silver or silver-plated base metals like electroplated nickel silver, casting fine details into molds prior to hand-finishing and polishing.

During the late Victorian period, silver and electroplated novelties featuring naturalistic and figural motifs, such as cupped hands or botanical elements, became fashionable decorative accessories for receiving calling cards or displaying small items.
