English 17th Century Sword or Rapier Chest

A very interesting oak rapier or sword chest from the 17th Century. The simple six plank construction of this chest makes it a very traditional piece of English rural furniture from that time.

Iron strap-work hinges and iron lock-plate complete this piece. This chest has a beautiful deep patina that only time can give. The front of the chest has simple carved decoration either side of a carved date showing 1679 and the initials “wes”. There are the usual repairs to the shaped feet that are to be expected in a piece of furniture of this age.
