Handsome Antique Horn and Silver Plate Inkwell Dated 1897

19th century
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

An outstanding late Victorian inkwell made from two cattle horns and mounted with silver plated fittings, a stunning combination and always highly sought-after; I haven't had one of these for several years.

The large inkwell is made from a hefty piece of crystal with a hinged lid, engraved clearly as a presentation piece in 1897, some usual wear to the plate on the interior.

Below the ring handle, is an integral pen rest for one's dip pen (the one shown is a new example which I am including in the sale to complete the look)

Excellent condition measuring 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" tall. The glass inkwell measuring 2 1/2" square.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late nineteenth century, utilitarian desk accessories were frequently combined with decorative natural materials, such as horn and silver plate, to create functional items for writing desks. Horn inkstands often incorporated sporting or naturalistic themes popular in Victorian country houses and study spaces.

These inkstands typically comprise natural bovine horn, electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or sterling silver fittings, and clear or cut glass reservoirs to contain liquid ink safely without corroding the metal.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit makers marks or registration numbers stamped into the silver plate, appropriate age-related patina on the metal mounts, natural grain variations in the horn, and hand-fitted glass components.

Place the inkstand on a dark timber writing desk, a styled bookshelf alongside leather-bound volumes, or a console table to add visual texture and a sense of history to a study or living area.

Keep horn objects away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent warping or cracking. Clean the silver plate gently with a soft microfibre cloth and specialized polish, avoiding harsh chemicals on the natural horn surface.
