Rare Antique Silver Plated English Novelty Table Gong - 1888

19th century
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A magnificent and rare find, this is a most charming figural double dinner gong with two children sitting on a naturalistic base. The frame is in the from of a wooden country pathway sign, in this case engraved both sides "Come This Way"; the top crowned with a wise old Owl.

The gongs hang (the black cord has been replaced, the old cord was falling to pieces) from the signs, I am unsure if they should hang with the children,s backs showing or the owl and gong strike showing, they can hang either way, so whatever is your preference (see the photos).

The base and sign are both blessed with an English Design Registration number (110907) which allows us to date it to 1888.

A magnificent piece in excellent condition. The base measuring 6 1/2" x 6" and standing 10 1/2" tall to top of Owl.

This Victorian table gong dates to 1888, cast in silver-plated base metal with a reflective silver colour. The piece takes the form of a rustic country signpost engraved with the words "Come This Way", crowned with an owl finial at the top, and mounted on a naturalistic base featuring two children seated near the upright post. Two round gongs hang suspended by black cords beneath the sign arms, accompanied by a matching striker with a dark round head and a circular loop handle. English design registration number 110907 appears on both the base and the sign. Measuring 16 cm wide by 15 cm deep and standing 27 cm tall, this novelty dinner gong suits display upon a sideboard top or an occasional table in a living room, hallway, or dining space. The design allows the gongs to rotate on their cords depending on preference, and the replacement cords maintain the hanging mechanism securely.

Popularised during the late Victorian era, table gongs were used in domestic dining rooms to announce meals, with novelty designs incorporating whimsical themes, animals, or signposts becoming functional table accessories.

Antique table gongs were typically constructed from brass, bronze, or electroplated nickel silver (EPNS), often featuring cast base metal structures with silver plating and suspended circular metal plates.

Authentic late 19th-century pieces frequently bear makers marks, design registration numbers, or EPNS hallmarks, alongside era-appropriate construction features such as cast naturalistic bases and matching strikers.

A Victorian table gong serves as an intriguing accent piece when placed on a dining room sideboard, entry console, or displayed within an eclectic bookshelf arrangement.

Clean silver-plated items gently using a soft cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals that can strip the thin layer of silver from the base metal.
