Here is a superb quality, rare and completely original antique Low Countries Oak travelling iron strap trunk, circa 1730.

Here is a superb quality, rare and completely original oak travelling iron strap trunk, circa 1730 from the Low Countries (either Sweden, Holland or Belgium). The trunk features an elegant dome shaped lid, which is decorated with the original profuse hand beaten iron strap work and studs. Likewise, the front, sides and back is also decorated with this original iron strap work. The trunk boasts its original steel side carrying handles. The trunk also boasts its original lock and original working key, which is very rare to see. The trunk opens up to reveal a large practical storage space. The domed lid opens on its original hand beaten iron hinges. On the left hand side on the inside is the original candle box. Below the candle box, is a secret compartment, which is ideal for hiding valuables such as jewellery. This style of trunk was designed to sit on the floor. The back of the coffer features the original oak back and original floor. The interior is clean, dry and the coffer is practical and useable. The exterior of the coffer boasts a stunning rich oak colour patination.

The trunk has sought after proportions and is ideal for storage space in the household. The trunk would have been commissioned for a wealthy country homeowner.

The trunk features a rich oak mod brown colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

Condition Report:

The trunk is excellent original condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges and some old wear to the bottom four corners of the trunk, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The frame of the trunk is completely original featuring the original floor, top, sides, interior and back. The trunk also boasts its original working lock and original key, which is very rare to see. The working iron hand beaten strap hinges and the iron strap work are all original. The interior is clean, dry and the coffer is practical and useable. The trunk is solid in joint and ready to use.
