Possibly the finest example of a 19th century storage trunk we''ve ever seen. The moulded-edge top lifts on solid brass hinges that are banded across the depth of the lid for extra strength. There is an internal candle box with an unusual sliding cover. Externally there are flush-mounted brass corner protectors, three key escutcheons the centre of which has a working key to the original lock, and shaped bracket foot supports. In solid teak, it retains its original finish with a rich warm colour of immense depth and character. It is English – or from one of the English colonies – and dates from c1800 – c1825.
