An extremely high quality mid-19th century general purpose storage trunk in mahogany. It is of exposed dovetail construction with a plain plinth base and has a moulded-edge lid that lifts to reveal a single storage compartment with a useful sliding tray for smaller objects. This absolutely beautiful coffer – so appealing for being of plain understated design – has very fine well-figured timbers and an original finish with a rich warm colour and patination. It is finished all the way round so could easily serve as a useful low table. This fine box is English, and it dates from c.1850.
