A Beautiful Solid English Elm Trunk

Description

A truly stunning example of an early 19th century general purpose storage trunk in solid English elm. It has beautifully figured timbers that retain their original finish with a rich, warm colour and a glowing patination. The moulded edge top lifts on its original wrought iron hinges to reveal a single storage compartment. The carcass is of exposed dovetail construction and it has a simple plinth base to all four elevations and a finished back enabling it to be used in the middle of a room and not necessarily against a wall. There is a working key to the original lock. It is of elegant proportions having a more upright boxy look than the usual longer lower versions. This wonderful coffer dates from c.1800 – c.1825.
