Description

A beautiful example of an early general-purpose storage trunk in solid English elm. The lift-up lid opens on its original wrought iron hinges to reveal a single storage compartment with a lidded candlebox at one end. The trim to the lid's surround has a discreet straight-moulded detail to its lower edge which is replicated in the top edge of the simple plinth base support. With its original finish throughout and a most attractive rich, warm colour and patina, this stunning coffer - so useful as a low table - is English, c1820s. There is a fully working lock and key.
