This is a good quality and triple panel Charles II English antique oak coffer, attributable to the West Country, England, circa 1650 - 1700. The coffer features a triple panel design with three panels to the lid and front of the coffer. Constructed in the traditional peg construction method, the coffer features a channel-moulded frame. The upper section of the coffer boasts a row of lunette carvings and below, there are three diamond shaped lozenges with floral centres. The lid is connected to the base with the original hand beaten iron loop hinges. Inside, there is the original candle box to the right hand side. There is also a working lock and key with this coffer which locks the top lid onto the base. The coffer sits on its original style feet, which is rare to see. The back of the coffer features the original rough-hewn back and original floor. This coffer has sought after proportions not being too tall. This coffer would have been commissioned for a wealthy country homeowner.

The interior is clean, dry and the coffer is practical and useable. The exterior of the coffer boasts a stunning rich oak colour patination. This is an important oak coffer having been around in the days of Charles II, Cromwell’s conquest of Ireland & Scotland and the Great Fire of London. The coffer would be ideal as a storage box in a bedroom in front of a bed.

Condition Report:

The frame of the coffer is original featuring the original floor, top, sides and back. The coffer stands on its original styles. The working lock and key are very old replacements. The iron hand beaten loop hinges are original. The interior is clean, dry and the coffer is practical and useable. Free of active woodworm. The coffer is solid in joint and ready to use. Considering the age of this early coffer, it is in very good condition and does not detract from its attractive appeal.
