This is a super quality and unusual George III English oak blanket box or chest, circa 1780 which is in original excellent condition. This box has sought after and unusually small proportions. The top of the box is constructed of two wide planks and features a moulded lid frame. The lid is hinged to the box with its original hand beaten iron strap hinges. The front, sides and back have been constructed with single plank pieces. The box is held together with a lovely hand-dovetailed construction, which is clearly visible on the front corners of the box. The box features its original working lock and key. There is a rustic brass key escutcheon on the front. Inside, there is the original candle box to the left hand side. There is also a working lock and key with this coffer which locks the top lid onto the base. The coffer sits on an elegant moulded plinth and terminates on its original bracket feet. All timber planks on this box are original. To each side of the box is steel carrying handles.

The interior is clean, dry and the coffer is practical and useable. The exterior of the coffer boasts a stunning rich oak colour patination. The coffer would be ideal as a storage or blanket box; even a coffee table!

This stool features a rich mellow oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

Condition Report:

The frame of the coffer is original featuring the original floor, top, sides and back. It also has the original working lock (including key), original steel strap hinges and side carrying handles. The coffer stands on the original bracket feet. The working lock and key are very old replacements. The iron hand beaten loop hinges are also original. There are no splits to the top or sides of the coffer. The box boasts its original polish, which is what give it its lovely mellow oak colour. The interior is clean, dry and the coffer is practical and useable. The coffer is free of woodworm, solid in joint and ready to use.
