The coffer features a six-plank construction with chip carved edging to the front and top.

The coffer sits on its original length 5½” styles, which is very rare to see. The top of the coffer still has the original iron loop hinges. The iron striking plate and clasp are original and there is a very old replacement working lock & key. The six-plank coffer has been constructed with the original handmade iron nails. The back of the coffer features the original rough-hewn back and original floor. On the underside of the coffer there are carvings inscribed “T.F” (see photos). The coffer features the original polish therefore it has a stunning rich deep colour / patination. The interior is clean, dry and the coffer is practical and useable. This is an important oak coffer having been around in the days of Charles II, Cromwell’s conquest of Ireland & Scotland and the Great Fire of London. The coffer would be ideal as a storage box in a bedroom in front of a bed.

Condition Report:
The coffer is original and features the iron striking plate, clasp, original floor, top, sides, back and feet. The coffer stands on the original 5½” style feet, which is very rare to see. There is a working lock and key. The coffer retains its original iron loop hinges to the lid. There has been an old repair near the left hinge on the back of the coffer. The interior is clean, dry and the coffer is practical and useable. The coffer is solid in joint and ready to use. The coffer is free of active woodworm. Considering the age of this very early coffer, it is in excellent condition and does not detract from its attractive appeal.
