A very fine example of an early 19th century general purpose storage trunk in solid elm. The simple, understated design consists of a rectangular moulded-edge lift-up lid opening on its original wrought-iron hinges to reveal a plain interior with an enclosed candlebox at one end. Its exposed dovetail constructed carcass is made from extremely well-figured timbers having a rich golden colour and an original warm glowing patina. This beautiful Georgian coffer – English, c.1800/c.1820 – can also be used as a low table. There is a working lock and key.
