Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Edwardian rise and fall lamps feature adjustable brass stems or counterweight mechanisms that allow the height and angle of the light source to be altered. Produced during the early 20th century, these lamps were designed primarily as functional task lighting for desks and reading tables, often paired with decorative art glass shades.

These lamps were typically constructed from solid cast or spun brass, which was polished or lacquered. The shades were often crafted from blown glass, including frosted, opalescent, or vaseline glass, which contained trace amounts of uranium dioxide to produce a distinctive yellow-green tint.

Authentic pieces generally display mechanical brass fittings such as thumbscrews, sliding collars, or gooseneck joints. Look for period-appropriate shade fittings, heavy weighted bases to maintain stability, and faint oxidisation in the crevices of the metalwork.

Position the lamp on a dark wood writing bureau, a home office desk, or a sideboard to create a focused reading nook. The warm tone of the brass and the soft glow of the glass shade provide an accent that contrasts well with both classic paint palettes and contemporary neutral interiors.

Dust the brass stem regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical abrasives that can strip historical patination. Clean the glass shade gently using warm water and a mild detergent, ensuring it is completely detached from electrical components before washing.
