A Rare Edwardian Novelty Silver Articulated Boat Salt & Spoon

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Booth Antiques
Description

A wonderful item of Edwardian novelty silver. This superb piece is created to represent a boat on a cart. The body is decorated in rococo designs, with a vacant cartouche to each side. It is seated on a cart with articulated wheels and has a staff, chain and anchor to the front. The whimsical combination of maritime and garden motifs, suggests a Dutch origin and this is underlined by the London import marks. The interior is richly gilded and a hallmarked silver spade from the same era, complets the duo. A superb and rare example, both practical and decorative. Dimensions below.

A novelty salt cellar is an ornamental container crafted in an imaginative or realistic formsuch as a boat, wheelbarrow, or animaldesigned to hold salt at the dining table. Popular during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, these items combined functional table service with conversation-starting craftsmanship.

Edwardian novelty salts were typically constructed from sterling silver or electroplated nickel silver, often featuring a silver-gilt interior bowl. The gilding served a practical purpose by protecting the silver base metal from corrosion caused by salt.

Authentic British silver items from the Edwardian period bear official hallmark stamps indicating the makers mark, silver purity standard, assay office symbol, and date letter corresponding to the years between 1901 and 1910.

Beyond traditional dining table placement, miniature novelty silver items function well displayed on a sideboard top, arranged within a glazed display cabinet, or repurposed on a vanity tray to hold small items.

Wash the piece gently in warm water with mild soap after use to remove salt residue, avoiding abrasive pads on the gilding. Polish the silver exterior with a soft cotton cloth and silver polish, storing in low-humidity conditions to prevent tarnish.
