This vintage brooch from the 1930s takes the form of a butterfly executed in sterling silver and enamel. The wings display a vibrant combination of lime green and orange guilloche enamel, detailed with black eyespot markings and textured veins, while the body and antennae are rendered in shaped silver. A traditional pin and c-clasp fastening is fitted to the reverse, alongside a sterling silver hallmark. The piece measures 3.1 cm wide and 2 cm high. Today, this brooch can be pinned to lapels, scarves, hats, or bags to add a bright splash of colour to everyday outfits. It suits nature lovers and collectors of antique silver and enamel accessories alike, functioning as a decorative accent for casual or formal wear.

Insect-themed jewellery, particularly butterfly brooches, gained widespread popularity during the late Victorian era and continued through the Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and mid-20th-century periods. Enamelling techniques were frequently employed to replicate the natural colouration of butterfly wings on precious metal mounts.

These brooches are typically constructed from sterling silver, silver-gilt, or gold, serving as the base frame and pin mechanism. Vitreous enamel, made from powdered glass fused to the metal surface at high temperatures, creates the colourful wing patterns.

Authentic pieces generally feature purity hallmarks such as Sterling, 925, or makers marks on the reverse. Inspecting the pin mechanism, such as a C-clasp or rollover safety catch, helps date the object alongside evaluating the quality of the enamelling work.

Brooches can be worn on coat lapels, scarves, or hats, and can also be mounted inside framed shadow boxes for wall display. Collectors often arrange smaller jewellery items on fabric-lined trays or inside glass cloches as decorative accents.

Clean the metal using a soft silver polishing cloth, taking care to avoid harsh chemicals or liquid dips that can degrade the enamel. Store the item flat in a dry, soft-lined box away from direct heat to prevent thermal shock and chipping.
