Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Cushion-moulded cornice drawer: characteristic shape of Dutch case furniture of the period.

Fitted architectural interior: stepped small drawers and central cupboard retain original proportions.

An escritoire is a specialised writing cabinet featuring a fall-front door that lowers to create a flat writing surface, concealing internal drawers and compartments. Popularised across Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly in Dutch and French cabinetmaking, it served as a secure hub for correspondence and record-keeping.

Craftsmen primarily utilised high-grade walnut veneers applied over solid oak frames, decorated with floral marquetry featuring contrasting fruitwoods or stained timbers. Construction included hand-cut dovetail joints, brass keyhole escutcheons, and bun feet turned from solid timber.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-sawn veneers that are thicker than modern machine-cut veneers, alongside irregular saw marks on unpolished drawer interiors. Additionally, genuine age manifests through natural shrinkage cracks along grain lines and uneven oxidisation on brass hardware.

A marquetry escritoire serves as a focal architectural piece in a hallway, library, or living space when offset against neutral walls and modern lighting. Combining intricate historic woodwork with simple contemporary ceramics or minimal seating creates a balanced contrast between traditional craft and modern design.

Maintain stable indoor humidity and position the wood away from direct sunlight or radiators to prevent veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a thin coat of beeswax annually, avoiding silicone-based polishes or harsh chemical sprays.
