A Late 19th Century German Sitzendorf Porcelain Candlestick

19th century
Description

A late 19th century German Sitzendorf porcelain candlestick.

Worked in the form of two intertwined nude figures amongst leaves and foliage. Maker's mark to the underside, along with impressed model number 314. Circa 1890.

Measures approx. 35cm x 23cm diameter.

Sitzendorf porcelain: In 1760 Georg Heinrich Macheleid independently discovered porcelain in the small town of Sitzendorf, earning it the title of the birthplace of Thuringian porcelain. In 1762 he moved his production site to Volkstedt at the request of Prince Johann Friedrich von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, leaving Sitzendorf without porcelain production for nearly a century.

Later in 1850 Innkeeper Wilhelm Liebmann received the royal privilege to open a new porcelain factory in Sitzendorf, re-establishing and reviving ceramic production in the village.

The Voigt brothers Alfred and Carl Wilhelm Voigt acquired the factory in 1884, and scaled up production of ornate, Meissen- and Dresden-style pieces.

This late nineteenth-century German Sitzendorf porcelain candlestick showcases a Rococo Revival style in muted gold and cream soft enamel glaze with gold leaf accents. Worked in the form of two intertwined nude figures amongst leaves and foliage, the piece incorporates an acanthus leaf nozzle, draped textile details, and a classical figural group resting on an organic foliate base. The structure displays a maker's mark and an impressed model number 314 on the underside, presenting a soft-toned glazed finish with moulded naturalistic motifs throughout. The dimensions measure 35 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 23 cm deep. Placed upon a mantelpiece in a French Chateau inspired interior, the candlestick provides a decorative accent for a living room, drawing room, or hallway surface. The figurine arrangement and organic elements create a visual focal point within domestic spaces, suitable for display on side tables or display cabinets where traditional ceramic art is appreciated.

Sitzendorf porcelain originates from Thuringia, Germany, where production began in the mid-19th century. The manufactory became renowned across Europe for producing intricate porcelain figurines, candelabras, and decorative wares, often drawing design inspiration from Meissen and Rococo revival styles.

These pieces were crafted using hard-paste porcelain, liquid slip cast into multi-piece plaster moulds, and assembled by hand before firing. Intricate details such as foliage, classical drapery, and anatomical features were hand-modelled and finished with underglaze or overglaze polychrome enamels and gilded highlights.

Authentic Sitzendorf pieces usually feature an underglaze blue factory mark on the underside base, such as the crowned S or crossed lines mark used during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Examining the fine quality of the moulding, porcelain paste weight, and characteristic soft-tinted hand painting also helps confirm authenticity.

Position the candlestick as a focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or hallway console table alongside minimalist modern art or contemporary glassware to create a curated contrast. Pairing historic sculptural ceramics with neutral backdrop palettes allows the detailed craftsmanship to stand out.

Dust the ceramic regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent dirt accumulation in carved crevices. For deeper cleaning, gently wipe with a soft cloth dampened with lukewarm water and mild dish detergent, avoiding abrasive cleaners or prolonged submersion that could damage delicate gilding.
